Did you know that sugar cane originated in New Guinea?

From New Guinea it spread to India, and then continued on to China and the Middle East. The Arabs brought it to Spain in the 11th Century and it was brought to America with discovery of the new continents. Between 1580 and 1640 Brazil was the most important sugar colony on the Atlantic coast and the largest sugar supplier on the international market.
