Seeding: the start of a good harvest

Seeding, sowing

On this occasion, we will look at the particularities of one of the most important phases of agriculture: seeding.

It is perhaps the task that has the most impact on crop yield, together with the choice of suitable soil and the cultivation system. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) points out that “adequate seeding rates, spacing and placement are crucial for the development of the plant”.

The institution actually refers to the existence of “a wide range of tools and equipment that can improve seed operations in the specific socio economic and environmental context of farmers”, from broadcast seeding to pneumatic precision seeding.

To the quest for high productivity, modern farmers must add the responsibility to do so in a sustainable way, and this is possible if they assume good management practices. To do this, firstly the soil and climate characteristics of the land must be analysed: climate humidity and temperature, and soil depth, capacity for water retention, pH and minerals, slope, altitude, etc.

It is also important that the seeds are in optimum condition. It is recommended that they have not exceeded the usual germination period. When purchasing the seeds, the end of the guarantee date must be checked on the packaging, as the seeds’ germination capacity depends to a large extent on their condition before seeding. In addition to having the right seeds, properly treated and stored, it is necessary to apply them under specific temperature, humidity and oxygenation conditions.

All that is missing is the “tool”. Nowadays, the seeding phase can be carried out with discs or with a cultivator. The use of disc seed drills is still not very common in our country, but experts agree that they provide a greater degree of precision, a characteristic that would further the twofold objective of achieving good productivity in a less damaging way for the soil.

Bellota Agrisolutions is aware of this and manufactures seed disc in Spain, Brazil and the USA. Disc seeding is practically dominant throughout the American continent.

Moreover, the current favourable situation of global agriculture, backed by high demand, is causing sales of discs for seed drills to continue to increase significantly, especially on the American continent.  Worldwide, Bellota Agrisolutions has sold more than 5 million discs.

Portfolio

Within its portfolio, Bellota offers various components for seed drills for different uses, such as direct seed drills; traditional seed drills, such as continuous-flow seed drills and single-grain seed drills; and for various crops, such as cereal or corn seed drills, among others. Depending on the furrow opening, we can differentiate between disc seed drills and shoe or ploughshare seed drills. In disc seed drills, the success lies in the fact that the seed discs are designed to achieve a good furrow opening. Bellota seed discs, with their machined edges, optimum geometry for the selected task and boron steel, are extremely precise and long-lasting, guaranteeing a fully homogeneous task, ideal for precision seed drills. Bellota also offers a wide range of fluted discs or opener discs for all types of seeding and seeds.

Bellota also manufactures cultivators and tines for shoe or ploughshare seed drills. In these plougshares there is also increasingly more demand for shoes with tungsten inserts to make them last longer.

However you seed, you’ll find the right spare part at Bellota!
